SeaTec Lead The Way With Fuel Oil Conversaions

New regulations, especially environmental rules, implemented during a vessel’s trading life dictate that retrofit and upgrading works need to be undertaken. The recently enacted rules to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are one such challenge recently addressed by SeaTec.

On the 1st January 2010, new European legislation* came into force, that requires all vessels berthing in a European Union port for more than two hours to burn marine gas oil with a sulphur content of less than 0.1% in their auxiliary boilers. Failing to meet this legal requirement means that heavy fines can be imposed by the individual member state.

Many auxiliary boiler manufacturers can retrofit existing installations with new burners and modify boiler control panels for low sulphur marine gas oil operation. However, this can very often be the extent of their involvement, and the additional modifications required for the rest of the fuel oil system, are no less important and must be considered.

To be compliant with this European legislation, SeaTec can offer the full range of necessary services to convert fuel oil systems to operate on Low Sulphur Marine Gas Oil. SeaTec has been active in this field well in advance of the introduction of this legislation and, with by deploying experienced engineers, can apply a practical solution that will meet with the requirements of the classification societies and at the same time minimise disruption and conversion costs.

SeaTec help BAE SYSTEMS with the design of the Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carrier

Queen Elizabeth Aircraft CarrierAt the end of September 2009 SeaTec were awarded a contract to undertake 3D computer modeling of the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers.

The modeling process involves BAE Systems’ sites around the U.K. developing detailed 3D computer models of large blocks of the vessel, based on design information from the primary designers.

When BAE Systems required further resources to enable the Govan team to complete the modeling process, SeaTec were able to step in, join the team and work to provide an engineering resource solution to suit the programme.. In a very short period of time, the SeaTec team has grown to 37 Foran trained 3D computer modelers, and at the end of January, the team achieved a major design review milestone allowing SeaTec to prepare the model for outputs and production.

The last model review took place in early May and success was again achieved with the reviewers noting that SeaTec had achieved their targets at an impressive rate. The team is now in the last phase of the project and is expected to continue until July/August 2010.

Cofferdam Set Up

CofferdamThis photographs show UMC setting up the biggest cofferdam system they have ever been involved. The cofferdam will allow repair to the leg wells and ultimately install the three legs of a jack up rig in Oman, which was damaged during Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf of Mexico, in 2005. SeaTec developed the detail design of the cofferdam from the outline design required by UMC, the finished product coming in at just over 100 metric tonnes with an overall diameter larger than 18 meters.

So far the cofferdam construction and testing has been completed, including the special seal system that will ultimately allow the cofferdam to be drained down and result in a massive maximum buoyancy upthrust of 1500 tonnes on the structure.  The challenge was to create a dry working environment around the giant support feet (known as spudcans) of a jack up oil rig so that repairs could be undertaken on the top surfaces of each foot whilst the unit was afloat.  The cofferdam system will completely enclose each of the spudcans in turn and seal against the underside of the rig hull, and when in position the area around the spudcan can be drained down thus allowing surface workers to carry out the necessary repairs.  This in-water repair system provides a cost-effective and practical alternative to docking.

More Launches for SeaTec

SeaTec is pleased to announce the successful launch and delivery of two gas carriers and one Aframax tanker, with delivery of another Aframax tanker scheduled for early December 2008.

GAS ALKHALEEJThese new vessels, built for the Arab Maritime Petroleum Transport Company (AMPTC), are the result of great team work between SeaTec and AMPTC. The project started in April 2006 with SeaTec advising on specifications for the two gas carriers. Following on from this stage, plan approval took place during the summer/autumn of 2007 with steel cutting for the first (GAS ALKHALEEJ) commencing on 6th August 2007 and delivery on 3rd September 2008. The second gas carrier (OCEAN GAS) was delivered 24th October 2008, about three weeks ahead of schedule.

Steel cutting for the first Aframax tanker (ALBURAQ) took place on 17th December 2007 with delivery on 6th October 2008. This will be followed by delivery of the second Aframax tanker (SEA LEGEND) on 6th December.

The gas tankers were built at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in Mokpo in southwest Korea. Both were equipped with a Hamworthy gas plant which enables the carriage of propane, butadiene, butane, butylene and propylene in independent tanks.

The Aframax tankers are designed to carry crude oil and petroleum products and were built in Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan in eastern Korea.

Both sites were managed by SeaTec site staff with project management taking place in SeaTec Glasgow. Back up support was provided by SeaTec Shanghai whenever a quick management response was required by the owners on site.

NewsSeaTec Repair Services Win Exclusive Global Tank Coating Contract

SeaTec Repair Services have been awarded an exclusive worldwide contract by the Cleveland, Ohio-based chemical tanker coatings specialist Advanced Polymer Coatings (APC).

The contract is for the application and heat-curing of APC’s innovative MarineLINE Tank Coating Systems for chemical carriers. The contract covers both new building and recoating projects.

“The key deciding factors were our knowledge and experience in the new building and repair markets, flexible workforce, commitment to training for the application of the MarineLINE products and local management support for the application teams worldwide, all linked with ISO 9000 quality system approval by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance,” advises SeaTec Repair Services Director Adriana Caba.

The MarineLINE coating system requires a high standard of surface preparation, temperature and humidity control and final heat curing, which in many cases shipyards cannot achieve with present techniques and an increasing shortage of skilled labour.

To minimise the possibility for coating system failures APC has turned to SeaTec to offer ship owners and shipyards a turnkey solution for tank inspection, preparation, coating system supply, application and final heat cure.
